How to process refunds for your customers

This article will discuss how you can refund your customers through Stripe and PayPal.

Process refunds for your customers with Stripe

To offer your customers a refund through the Stripe payment gateway, log into your Stripe account and go to your Payments overview page.

Next, locate the payment that you would like to refund and click on the payment to open the details page.

In the top right corner, you will see a button that says refund. Click this button and the Refund Payment Window will appear.

Here you will be able to add the refund amount, the reason for the refund, and any other notes that might be pertinent to the refund.

After that information has been entered, click on the blue button to process the refund.

Please note and mention to your customers that their refunds can take from 5-10 days to appear on their bank statement.

How to process refunds for your customers with PayPal

To offer your customers a refund through PayPal, log in to your PayPal account, and go to the Activity tab at the top of the page.

Next, locate the transaction you would like to refund and click on it to view the payment details.  Here scroll down below the Payment details and click on ‘Issue a refund’.

You will then be taken to the Issue Refund page where you will see the details of the transaction once again. You will also be able to enter the amount you would like to refund your customer.  This will be set at the full amount as default.  You can also enter an invoice number and any notes to your customer in the ‘Notes to Buyer section. Once you have entered the refund information, click Continue.

You will be taken to the Review Refund page. Check over your refund to ensure all of the information was entered correctly and click ‘Issue Refund’ to confirm the refund.

Lastly, you should be taken to the Refund Complete page to confirm that the refund has been processed.

Please note, If you paid with a credit card, the payment is refunded to your card. If the card you paid with is closed or invalid, the payment will still be refunded to your credit card account. It can take up to 30 days for a refund to appear on your card statement.

If you paid with your bank or PayPal account balance, the payment is refunded to your PayPal account. After you’ve received the refund, you can withdraw it from your PayPal balance to your bank account
